A Walk Through History
Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.
The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.
Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.
In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Chester is a beautiful and ancient city where Roman Legionaires, Viking raiders, and Norman invaders once walked. We especially enjoyed the Roman Amphitheatre ruins and the 1000 year old Cathedral. It is worth the trip.

THE ARCHITECT A GOOD WELL ORGANISED PUB, GREAT QUIZ IN PIED BULL ON THURSDAY EVENING. 2 WETHERSPOONS TO GO TO IF NEED BASIC FOOD ONLY TRIED ONE - YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WILL GET THERE OF COURSE AND IT WAS TASTY. Chester is a great town for wandering, the City walls walk was a great introduction to the town and it is worth doing this soon after you arrive to get a good perspective of the town. The Grosvenor Museum was an unexpected gem and ideal for a wet morning

The city is vegan friendly, as well as the people being friendly. All historic sites are within walking distance, there is a sightseeing bus that does a tour with added river cruise as part of the price. Chester is still being excavated due to new architectural findings. The Visitor centre is well located, near to the cathedral, and the staff are very helpful. There are many places to eat, some restaurant chains and many local businesses.
